I managed to get the MacBook to uptade to OS X 10.9. Once that was done,
it would respond to a Command-R to boot to the recovery partition, which
it wouldn't do before. I've now updated to OS X 10.11 (El Capitan). What
I need to research further is creating bootable recovery media for the
inevitable hard drive crash.

Are you looking for a clean reinstall or to repair the current installation? I also have the 10.6.8 update version 1.1 to resolve several issues included the Mac Defender virus… yes, Macs do have one or two of those out there. :)
